What is the rotator cuff?
The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that help stabilize and move the shoulder. Tears can develop gradually with degeneration or occur after an injury.
Does every tear need surgery?
No. Some tears can be managed with physical therapy, activity modification, medication or injections. Surgery may be considered when pain and weakness remain limiting, after certain acute injuries or when the tear pattern and goals favor repair.
Arthroscopic repair
Rotator cuff repair is commonly performed arthroscopically through small incisions. The torn tendon is mobilized and secured back to bone using fixation selected for the tear pattern and tissue quality.
Recovery
Recovery typically includes a period of protection followed by progressive motion and strengthening. The exact timeline varies by tear size, repair, tissue quality and patient factors.
